Transferring files from Galaxy to PC

I've searched and haven't found anything addressing this. If it's already been addressed, please post a link.

When I connect my Galaxy S4 to my computer (Windows 7) with the USB cable that came with it, I can see the device in the left panel but nothing is showing up in the right panel; not even the "This folder is empty" message.

Can anyone suggest what might be going on? This is my first smartphone but I'm fairly computer savvy, and don't like not being able to figure this out.

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum

Normally Windows would prompt you for what you wanted to do so I guess that didn't happen. Try another USB port and if you get the Windows prompt just say open as a folder. There have been cases where nothing would allow Windows to see the storage on the phone which usually ends up as some type of problem with the PC rather than the phone. There is always the cloud option, like DropBox. I have a link below with additional ideas on transferring files to and from the phone.

With my S3 I had the issue of the phone erasing my windows license data. Yep, even that is possible. So every time I transferred something via USB,
I had to re-enter my windows key.

I have had the same problem as you, sometimes it worked when I rebooted the phone, and then tried reconnecting it again.
Try installing Kies, if that doesn't work, start Kies and leave it open, then connect the phone.

I don't use Dropbox anymore, it's a great app especially for us S4 users (with the 50 gig option) but transferring files to Dropbox from the phone
literally eats up my internet ( 200 mb in 2 days ?! yoink!)

    Leeshor,

It did give me the prompt, but open as a folder was not listed. here's what I saw:

    Capture.JPG

I chose Open folder to view files. Similar, but not the same.

Also tried another USB port with the same result. I'll do it through dropbox; it was just frustrating to know it can be done and not know how.

    Thanks!

That's the prompt I was talking about and open folder to view files would also be correct so if you are getting that far and can't see anything when you click that I don't know what to say.

On the first part of this post you mention the Windows licensing problem. I'm 99.9% certain it's the computer that is the problem but you probably already know that.

On the DropBox, it uses absolutely zero data on my S4 because I have it set to only upload on WiFi As soon as I can get on WiFi, boom, it starts uploading.

    gnjuss,

I'm not sure how I missed your post the first time through ... I'm installing Kies now. That may do what I'm trying to do.

    Thanks.

No, the phone did NOT erase your windows license key.

Yes, I know that now Beer Goggles, my computer was the problem. And something within Windows 8, don't know what.

Leesher, do I have to connect to WiFi manually, or does the Dropbox app detect my WiFi and starts uploading ('cuz that would be REALLY cool).

It's a setting in DropBox to "upload using" (and I have mine set to WiFi only) and as soon as you connect it starts up automatically.
