Don't know if this is any use to you but wifi transfer (pro) in play store should allow you to copy files from pc to s4 and vice versa. This works for me without any issue. Free version works just as well as paid. Just follow on screen instructions.

The only common denominators on all four are the S4 itself, and the Samsung products. (Kies and the driver)

And since so many people are having the problem, I'd have thought that Samsung might at least be working on a solution.
It isn't a Samsung problem. If you wiped your desktop and did a fresh install of Windows it would work. Sometimes Windows gets confused when more than one USB device has been installed. Sometimes it's a conflict with another driver, security or anti virus issues and dozens of other possibilities. It is not Samsung or the phone. As I have mentioned before, the same problem affects many tablets, (and other phones), including those not made by Samsung.

Current versions of Android don't support Flash player, try Puffin or Flashfox as an alternative browser.

I'll agree with that. I fooled around for a (very little) bit with Kies, and honestly, I didn't like using it.

I have Kies installed on one of my systems but haven't bothered to fire it up in at least a year.. It's a waste.

Any suggestions as to what they do use?
After all if Samsungs own software isn't up to the job.
But in any case, since the PCs' won't recognise the phone at all (Two laptops and one desktop via a hub, ) I don't' see how anyone else's software will work,

Try wifi transfer from play store. Free version will transfer files too. I use it to transfer files both ways.

I have a link that covers that in my signature. In case you can't see it, here it is [Guides] Printing & transfering files using apps.

The problem could be your usb cable.

All I want to do is to copy an application file from a CD to my S4.
So far I have two laptops and a USB hub that I can't get ANY sort of USb connection with.
I have the S4 now plugged into the front USB port of my desktop machine, and at last I can get a connection.
The phone has Android 4.4.2 which was automatically loaded the other day.
I have Kies 3 and it does connect to the S4.
It only gives me the option of copying media file, or synching with the likes of Outlook.
I can see the phone as an external drive to my PC, can open all the folders, but whenever I try to copy anything I just get the message (eventually) that the device has stopped responding or has been disconnected --- Which it hasn't.
I have the USB debug on, I have it set not to turn off when on charge, and to allow installations from non playstore locations. I don't have a SD card installed, and do have over 8 gb of space.

I am slowly going mad here: Two different laptops won't connect at all. The desktop will not connect via a USB hub.
So how DO I get this file from my PC to my S4?? - It is an .apk file.
When I navigate round Kies, it does not see the .apk file, because it isn't a media file.

So PLEASE someone, give me a step by step on what to do: I've been struggling with this for a week now.
---I had this problem and had spend few hours with Samsung tech support. After check all the posibilities, change to a good USB cable solved the problem. The bad cable charges OK, uploads OK, but can not download from PC to the phone. It works for one phone but can not work for other phone due to the alternation of the phone's usb connector. Try different cables! Hope this helps you.

    Welcome to the forum

You make a good point as some USB cable pinouts are not the same as others.

Samsung IS the problem. He tried it on 4 different computers with the same effect. My computer is a month old, I built it myself, OS is all clean and sparkly. I can view files, it recognizes the phone, but when viewing a lot of files or when trying to cut/copy files off the phone it makes windows explorer stop responding.
The cable idea seems like a good one but I'm using the cable that came with the phone, why would they give you something that isnt fully compatible with it? I'm going to try the wifi app right now.

EDIT: Wifi File Transfer works beautifully, I would just use that don't buy SD cards or new cables. Thanks for the quick patch of this problem.
