WiFi Not working "Authentication Error Occurred"

Just got my Galaxy S4, I love it. BUT.....

At home I am able to connect to my home's WiFi no issues. I am using a secure connection (WPA2 I believe).

At work I am unable to connect to our open "public" wifi that requires no security authentication. It gives me an error "Authentication Error Occurred"...and if I go to "Edit", Security is set to "None".

Now, you'd think to be quick to blame the wireless access point, but everyone else in the office is able to connect no problem with their mobile devices. Hell, I am even on this forum on the same wireless network via my laptop.

Why is my phone not being able to connect to this open/public/non-secure network?

    Welcome to the forum

Thi9s sort of thing happens at many public hotspots so I;m going to take a stab at this in your case. Some systems simply need for you to accept terms, at least once. You normally can't connect to those types of systems by going to WiFi settings directly but rather by opening a browser first and clicking on something like a checkbox then yes.

This isnt the case on this network. It doesnt even resolve a DHCP address ....doesnt even connect. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Talked with another guy who has an S4 at work. He said its a known issue with this WiFi chipset. Him and even people with the S3's arent able to connect to this network and many other public wireless access points.

I have yet to have a problem with "my" S4. Connected to several public hotspots and a dozen private access points without a problem (yet). But there is a known problem with some routers, specifically some Belkin models.

I have a possible solution for you though. I have connected to 3 different portable routers without a problem so you could get a small portable router, get it connected to the WiFi then you connect to the portable router. Most have the ability to act as a bridge or repeater so that could be a benefit.
