    Question weather widget and GPS

My weather widget will not update unless I have standalone GPS services turned on. Is this correct? My other phone's weather widgets could update with just Google location services turned on. I have VZW location services turned on and Wi-Fi & mobile network location services turned on but my weather won't update until I turn on Standalone GPS services.

    Thanks.

Hmm, it shouldn't need standalone GPS for it to update.

    Welcome to thje forum

I assume it's the stock weather widget. Some weather apps use cell tower locations, some need at least WiFi, though those can be inaccurate because the use the IP location which could be in another city but a few do need GPS for accuracy. My default widget does a good job but I have GPS on.

You may want to try a different weather app to see if it works.

Thanks for the responses. I like the stock weather widget and was going to roll with it but not if I need gps on to update. I'll go with a different widget from the store - I'll give the android weather a shot, thanks macuser.

it was the first app i found that had a 6 day forecast widget. i have the main widget set to transparent and theres a button on the bottom right to easily refresh.

I've noticed with the stock widget, with GPS, mobile data, etc, all enabled, except wifi, it can be way off. Driving up the highway earlier, I refreshed the stock widget and it said I was in Hanover NH, I was actually in Thetford, VT, next state over and a town north of where it said I was. I've had it do that on a few occasions in varying weather. It's a nice widget, I like it...just not too impressed with its inability to geocode the location correctly.

Is the Android weather widget ad free? If so I'll definitely give it a try

yea, the only thing i've paid for so far is need for speed most wanted. the detect my location option and the dont use gps option can be found in settings. its actually pretty accurate from what i've seen.

1 other thing I didn't mention in my previous post about various weather apps is that the apps may pick up their information from different locations. So whatever weather station there getting information from is the information you're going to get which makes some of them very in accurate if your closest actual weather station is miles away. Or even in another state.

    Hi,

I had the same problem. My son suggested restarting my s4 and it worked.
